Please note we are not an open farm and alpaca walks are only available on set dates.
We offer a fabulous Alpaca walking experience in the East Hertfordshire countryside, a fantastic present or a treat for yourself. A really different experience for that animal/alpaca mad friend or relative.
The 2023 alpaca walking season is now finished and will recommence in Spring 2024.
Details of our 2023 walking programme is shown below. The 2024 programme and prices will be available from week commencing December 4th. The 2024 activities will go online to book via our website or by telephone during this week.
We offer two types of walking experience.
1 - The Alpaca Walk Experience – total event duration 2- 2.5 hrs
2 - The Extended Countryside Walk – total event duration apprx 3-3.5 hrs
Both the above options involve walking with an alpaca. You can choose either to share an alpaca or walk one to one.
The walks comprise....
- Initial short talk on alpacas
- Guidance and training on walking with an alpaca
- An alpaca walk with one of our boys (the length of the two walks vary depending on which walk you choose- see below)
- Feeding carrots and photo opps at the end of the walk
- Back to Yew Tree base for one of our food and drink options (this varies depending on the date you choose- see below)
- Opportunity to browse & buy at our Yew Tree alpaca shop and yarn barn.
The Alpaca Walk Experience includes a 25-30 minute walk around picturesque fields and parkland in East Herts. This is the easier of the two walks and is ideal if you are little nervous or have no experience with animals or are worried about the speed you walk. Note if you have a walking stick or limited mobility this walk is not suitable. Please go to our alpaca adventure which is likely to suit you better.
The Extended Countryside Walk includes a one hour walk with your alpaca in the open countryside with wonderful views across open countryside. This is more demanding than the walk experience and includes an uphill walk. You you need to consider carefully which type of walk is most appropriate for your group and that all are capable of walking at a normal pace and holding an alpaca if it pulls suddenly.
Your Alpaca walk doesn't end after the walk, you then go back to base for either lunch (walk experience only), coffee & cakes (walk experience only) or homemade cream tea and cakes

Our programme has 9 walk events per month, April – September - six dates in each month are the Alpaca Walk Experience and three the Extended Countryside walk. For each event date we give the type of walk and whether it has lunch, cream tea or refreshments & cake afterwards.
Please note that the Extended Countryside Walk does not have any dates with lunch afterwards it only comes with Cream Tea and home made cakes.
There is an option to book sandwiches as an addition to the cream tea and refreshments and cake walks. Note, this additional option must be booked at least 36 hours prior to the date of the walk.
Each visit also includes a short 8-10 minibus ride to and from the walk location. It will not be possible to travel to the location separately.

Age Limits
Note: the age limit for walking our alpacas is 10 years.
Children aged 10-15 years must walk with an adult (i.e. they must choose the sharing option).

How to Order
STEP 1
CHOOSE WALK TYPE
Choose the type of walk - either the alpaca walk experience or extended countryside walk.
Please ensure you select the walk that is suitable for ALL the people in your group.
STEP 2
SELECT DATE
Select the date – click on the month you prefer to reveal all the dates for that month. You can then see all the dates for your preferred walk and the different food options with each. Click on the preferred date and you will be taken to the relevant booking page.
STEP 3
SELECT QUANTITY
When on the booking page for your selected date you decide whether you would like to share an alpaca or walk one alpaca one person – note: If you have a 10-15 year old in your group they share with an adult i.e. you must select the sharing option when you book.

Alpaca Events for Non-walkers/Children under 10 yrs
If you are looking for an Alpaca event suitable for those who would prefer just to meet and feed the alpacas (and not walk) or children 6-10 yrs please visit our Alpaca Adventures or Cria Capers pages.
New for 2023 - add sandwiches to your cream tea/refreshments & cake walks
In 2023 you have the chance to include a little savoury to either the Countryside or Walk Experience walks. You can add our freshly made sandwiches to the Yew Tree cream tea and home made cake walk or to the refreshments and cake walks. Each serving includes one round of sandwiches (4 small sandwiches) with salad and crisps garnish.
The sandwiches will be brown/granary bread and will be one of the following four fillings.
- Cheese & Chutney
- Brie redcurrant & rocket
- Tuna mayo & spring onion
- Ham salad
If you prefer a specific filling, have a gluten free requirement or are vegetarian please email us beforehand (no earlier than one month before the date of the walk).
The cost is £4 per portion (per round).
Orders for two or more people within one booking will have different fillings for each round of sandwiches.
It is possible to add optional sandwiches to all walk types except the walk experience with lunch.
Please note it is not possible to have sandwiches instead of the cream tea/cakes included in the cost of the walk. The above offer is in addition.

We have a range of gift vouchers specifically for Alpaca walking tailored to match the price of the various options.
You can either receive your voucher online or opt for a gift box which includes a hard copy voucher. In the gift box you will receive the A6 card voucher in an envelope (similar to that pictured below), an alpaca walking greeting card in cello for you to complete, plus a colour A5 leaflet on Alpaca walking and colour A5 leaflet on Yew Tree Alpacas.

Animal Activities Licence
Yew Tree Alpacas have been licenced by the East Hertfordshire District Council to operate an alpaca walking business based at Anstey in East Hertfordshire. We hold animal activities licence 19/0915/AA which is valid for 3 years.
Our first licence was issued from March 2019 – March 2022. We were reassessed in June 2022 and the renewed licence is valid until March 2025.
