The Alpaca Stroll and the Alpaca Walk Experience

Food and Refreshment

An important part of Yew Tree's walks are the home made lunch and teas afterwards. All the sandwiches are made at Yew Tree on the day and the cakes and scones for the cream tea are also home made at Yew Tree. You can check out the details of each below. Each walk date will have either a lunch or cream tea and cakes afterwards. This is included in the dates diary below.

Book freshly made sandwiches with your cream tea

The cream tea walks do not include sandwiches but there is an option to book sandwiches as an addition to the cream tea and cakes. Note, this an additional pre booked option and cannot be booked on the day of the walk. For £5 per person you receive 1½ rounds of sandwiches crisps garnish and green salad and tomato. 

You can request one of our fillings or we choose for you on the day. Cheddar & Chutney, Ham Salad, Tuna mayo & spring onion or Brie, redcurrant & rocket.

Alpaca Trekking

The longer alpaca trek complements our alpaca walking programme each year.  It is ideal for those who have been on one of our walks or elsewhere alpaca walking and would like to take a step up and spend longer with their alpaca followed by a Yew Tree lunch to finish off.  See more details below.

Our Yew Tree Alpaca Trek  is a double length alpaca walk of approx 1¾ hours with a break halfway in a grassy field / shady orchard for refreshments and biscuits at the half way stage. At the end of the trek you'll have worked up an appetite so we're sure you'll enjoy our lunch of freshly made sandwiches, yogurts and cakes/bakes and refresments to restore your energy. Not forgetting a chance to browse our range of alpaca products.

You'll start your trek with a short talk about alpacas and the Yew Tree herd. We then go to our fields where you meet your alpaca and have a short pre-trek training session around the field before you set out.

The trek is approx.  1¾ hours and the whole visit to Yew Tree Alpacas 3-3½ hours.

This is an ideal option for those who have already been on an alpaca walk either at Yew Tree or elsewhere.  If you have not walked an alpaca before, we recommend our shorter walk option first. However this is not essential and if you consider yourself physically fit and confident around animals then this trek may be just for you.  

For those who have already been on one of Yew Tree's alpaca walks you can request your favourite alpaca when you book.

Louise writes... I bought the trek for my friend's surprise 50th birthday present - a short discussion about the day, then the introduction to our alpaca then off we went on a lovely trek. The short break and drink was most welcoming (we fed our alpacas carrots during the break). It was over all too quickly back to the farm for lunch. A great day. 

There are two booking options; you can have your own alpaca for the entirety of the trek OR share an alpaca with a friend – you and your friend can take turns leading your alpaca during the trek.

Two people sharing £79.00 including refreshments en route and lunch after the walk

Our dates for the 2021 season are not yet confimed but we usually hold a trek in July and August each year with extra dates depending on demand.

• Cannot be exchanged for cash
• If the full value is not redeemed there is no refund
• If you buy multiple vouchers, up to three vouchers can be redeemed together in one transaction. If you have additional vouchers they cannot be added to the main transaction
• To redeem: type the voucher code in the promocode box in the basket at checkout.
• If redeeming two or three vouchers in a single transaction you type in the voucher code and press SAVE then type in the second and third voucher codes clicking SAVE after each entry. The system should then take off the total value of the vouchers from the purchase
• If purchasing an activity, the expiry date shown on this voucher refers to latest date you can book. You can do the alpaca activity after the expiry date, but the voucher cannot be redeemed after this date.

Walking Gift Certificate Terms & Conditions

• The Walking Gift Vouchers are only valid for the Walk Experience valued £48 and £85. They cannot be used for the Alpaca Stroll but if you would like to use them for a stroll please call us we may be able to sort this for you.
• They are valid for one transaction only and cannot be exchanged for cash.
• Must be redeemed online via the online shop on the website.

Yew Tree Alpacas is a Hertfordshire based Alpaca farm, breeding high quality alpacas from prize-winning stock. Our breeding programme consistently produces alpacas with fine quality fleece, excellent conformation, and gentle natured temperament.

 
We sell a range of different types of alpacas and alpaca packages to suit different requirements, whether you are a first time alpaca owner or already own your own herd.  Our pet alpacas are quiet to handle and all are head collar and trained to walk on headcollar and lead. Care packages and introductory workshops are also available to reassure you in your first year of ownership.

Alpacas for Sale in Hertfordshire

We have a range of different types of alpacas for sale, all are registered with the British Alpaca society and microchipped. We can also deliver your new alpacas to your home (mileage chargeable) and there is no vat to be added to quoted prices.

For new owners within 1 hour of our location we also offer care packages for the first 12 months (includes all main management tasks) to give you that reassurance that help is always on hand.

We currently have (Spring 2025) a wide range of qualities and prices due to reduction in our grazing area. 

A few of the packages we have available as at Spring 2025...

• Group of 3 weanling females 8-9 months of age
• Group of 4 young boys 9 months - 18 months
• Potential studs 2-3 years old
• Stud male with either potential stud or other entire males
• Starter breeding package of 3-4 breeding alpacas
• Two/three Non breeding girls 

Please note if you do not already own alpacas we sell a minimum of three alpacas to new owners. We believe this is the minimum for their well being if no other alpacas on the property.

Alpaca Walks 2026

 

Welcome to Yew Tree's Alpaca Walks. Our season for alpaca walks is  March - September '26. 

The walks are most Fridays and Saturdays with either cream tea and home made cakes, lunch or refreshments after each walk.

 

The walks make a fabulous present for any age (10yrs+). An unforgettable experience in a beautiful countryside setting

Please note we are not an open farm and alpaca walks are only available on set dates.

 

Yew Tree Alpacas offer  fabulous Alpaca Activities from their base in picturesque Anstey, East Hertfordshire. Any of walks and activities make a fantastic present or a special treat for yourself. An unforgettable experience for that animal/alpaca mad friend or relative. 

Yew Tree offers two different types of alpaca walks and also an Alpaca Adventure (the adventure does not include walking an alpaca).

Note: The age limit for walking our alpacas is 10 years.

 

Children aged 10-15 years must walk with an adult on the Alpaca Walk Experience (i.e. they must choose the sharing option). They can walk one to one on the Alpaca Stroll.

How to Order

 

STEP 1

CHOOSE WALK TYPE

 

Choose the type of walk - either the alpaca walk experience or alpaca stroll.

 

Please ensure you select the walk that is suitable for ALL the people in your group.

 

STEP 2

SELECT DATE

 

Select the date – click on the month you prefer to reveal all the dates for that month. You will see  the dates for your preferred walk and the different food options with each. Click on the preferred date and you will be taken to the relevant booking page. 

STEP 3

SELECT QUANTITY

 

When on the booking page for your selected date  you decide whether you would prefer to book the sharing option ( two people walking one alpaca) or  walk one to one with your alpaca – If you are booking the Walk Experience and there are 10-15s in your group you should select the sharing option. If you book the Alpaca stroll 10-15s can walk 1-1 or share an alpaca

Upgrade to Afternoon Tea on the cream tea & cake and refreshments walks.

 

You have the chance to upgrade the walks with cream tea & cakes or refreshments by adding freshly made sandwiches. Each serving includes 1½ round of sandwiches (6 small sandwiches) with salad and crisps garnish.

 

The sandwiches will be on brown/granary bread and will be one of the following four fillings (you can request which filling of those below via email beforehand)
 

• Cheddar Cheese & Chutney
• Brie, redcurrant & rocket
• Tuna mayo & spring onion
• Ham salad

The cost is £5 per person

Orders for two or more people within one booking will have different fillings for each round of sandwiches.

Gift Vouchers for Alpaca Walking

 

We no longer do gift vouchers specifically for Alpaca Walks. Instead we have a range of general gift vouchers which can be bought in values of £25, £50, £75 & £100, which can be used against our activities, including walks, or in our online shop. 

 

Simply work out the value of walk you wish to buy for and order the appropriate value in our gift vouchers. You can either receive your voucher online or opt for a gift box which includes a hard copy voucher. In the gift box you will receive the A6 card voucher in an envelope (similar to that pictured below), an alpaca walking greeting card in cello for you to complete, plus a colour A5 leaflet on Alpaca walking and colour A5 leaflet on Yew Tree Alpacas.

Terms & Conditions

 

Please note the following terms & conditions regarding Yew Tree Alpacas, Alpaca Walking

 

We can take a maximum of 10 alpacas on the walk experience, 8 alpacas on the Alpaca Stroll.  If the bookings are 4 or fewer, 2 weeks before the date, then we reserve the right to offer an alternative date or your money back. During all walks we have two Yew Tree personnel on foot. One at the front and and one at the back of the alpacas for extra safety and security. Children are welcome 10 -15 years. On the Walk Experience and Countryside walks they must share an alpaca with an adult, the accompanying adult must be 18 years or above. Note on the Alpaca Stroll it is possible to book one alpaca for one child 10-15yrs Note if your booking is just 1 adult, 1 alpaca we assume you will be attending alone. If it is only you who wants to do the walk and your partner is just coming to accompany then you book the shared option and you do all the walking with our alpaca. If you come with someone who has not booked, they should either drop you off and return later or wait in the car. There is no waiting area on site for those who have not booked. The walk experience and Countryside walks involve a short trip mini bus trip to and from the walk location.  The arrival and latter part of the event are at Yew Tree Alpacas base in Anstey. It is not possible to travel direct to the walk location or go in your car behind the minibus. There is no discount on the two person price if a 10-15yr old child is one of the pair All stated prices include both the alpaca part of the event and either lunch or cream tea. There is no extra to pay for the food and refreshment part. Conversely you don't receive a discount if you do not want the food and refreshment section.

You will receive automatic confirmation by email at the time of booking. Approx 5 days before the event you will receive the detailed programme and pre walk information.   Date changes cost £10 per booking up to 14 days before the date of your walk. If you wish to change the date then please contact us and we will provide you with a code so you can rebook online. This code will be for your original purchase price minus our £10 admin fee. It is not feasible to change to another date within 14 days of your walk. Cancellation 14 or more days prior to the event 50% refund. Within 14 days no refund. If some or all of your group do not attend on the day there are no refunds. If showery/light rain on the day of the visit it is likely to be going ahead. However if there are high winds/heavy rain (or other unforeseen circumstances) then we may have to cancel the visit. We will telephone/email you by 7.30am if the walk is to be cancelled. We will offer you a voucher code for the full value of your booking so you can book one of our walks in 2025 (or if you prefer a refund this will also be feasible minus an admin charge of £5.00). Please note this is only if we (Yew Tree Alpacas) have to cancel the walk. If you decide not to come due to weather conditions and the walk goes ahead, the above does not apply, there is no refund. Please note the duration of the two alpaca walks published. If you are a slow walker, unsteady on your feet or have an injury which impacts on your walking ability, then the walk experience and Countryside walks are NOT suitable. The alpaca stroll may be possible but you should email us to check otherwise book the alpaca adventure. You must be able to use both hands to hold the lead rope when walking your alpaca, if you cannot do this then the alpaca walks are not suitable for you.  Alpacas can be scared or surprised by sudden sounds/movement this means that it is possible your alpaca may suddenly pull or shy during the walk. This is not common/usual but it is possible. You must be confident that you have the strength to hold the alpaca if he suddenly pulls forward during the walk. It is very important you consider carefully which walk is most appropriate for you/your group. If you are not sure and you have not walked with Yew Tree alpacas before then book either the mini or the Walk experience, you can always book the Countryside walk at another time if you enjoy your visit.

Alpaca Walking

We offer a fabulous Alpaca walking experience in the East Hertfordshire countryside, a fantastic present or a treat for yourself. A really different experience for that animal/alpaca mad friend or relative. You can also give our gift voucher for alpaca walking which comes in values of £27, £36, £54 or £72 so the recipient can book a walk on a date convenient for them (valid until 31st Jan 2020-note this is for booking not doing the activity). 

There are two options....you can have your own alpaca for the entirety of the walk OR share an alpaca with a friend – you and your friend can take turns leading your alpaca during the walk.  

Our Spring/Summer season starts in April, and continues until September. All Frosty Christmas walks are now fully booked but there are five alpaca walks in January 2020 now available to book in our online shop.  After this we are closed for alpaca walking until April 2020.  DATES FOR 2020 (April-Sept) GO LIVE FOR BOOKING 1ST DEC 2019.

Note we may have late availability as people book a long way ahead and sometimes want to change date so its worth ringing  7 days before or asking to be put on a waiting list.

You can either choose a walk with refreshments and biscuits to finish or you can complete a truly memorable walk with a homemade cream tea (home made tea bread and victoria sandwich cake also included). Note the different price of these walks reflects the difference in the food & refreshments offer at the end of the walk, the walk and time with the alpacas is the same for both.

We can take a maximum of 9 alpacas on the walk and a minimum of 6. If the bookings fall below 6 then we will offer an alternative date or your money back. When walking out in the countryside we have two Yew Tree personnel on foot at the front and back of the alpacas for extra safety and security. Children are welcome 10 years and above. They can share an alpaca with an adult but the accompanying adult must be 16 years or above. Note you cannot book 1 person, 1 alpaca option for a child under 16 yrs. Children accompanying an adult (sharing an alpaca) must be 10 yrs and over.  Note if you book just 1 adult 1 alpaca option we assume you will be attending alone. If it is only you who wants to do the walk and your partner isn't interested then you book the shared option and you do all the walking with our alpaca If you come with someone who has not booked, they should either drop you off and return later or wait in the car. There is no waiting area on site for those who have not booked.

There is no discount on the two person price if the child is one of the pair Our all inclusive price includes the initial talk, advice and guidance on handling, the alpaca walking experience both in our fields and out in the countryside and tea/coffee biscuits (or cream tea depending on option selected) at the end of the walk. On booking you will receive confirmation by email within 48 hrs. Approx 5-7 days before the event you will receive the detailed programme and info about what to wear and what to expect. You can swop to a different date of walk at no extra charge if more than 14 days before the date of your walk. If you swop to a new date within 14 days prior to the event (up to 48hrs before) there will be a charge of £10 per booking.It is not feasible to swop to another date within 48hrs of the event date. Cancellation 14 or more days prior to the event 50% refund. Within 14 days no refund. If some or all of your group do not attend on the day there are no refunds.  Please note the duration of the alpaca walk is approx. 45 to 50 minutes on local footpaths and bridleways with some uneven ground. The whole event is 2-2.25hrs. if you are a slow walker, unsteady on your feet or have an injury which impacts on your walking ability, then the walk will not be suitable. You must also be able to use both hands to hold the lead rope when walking your alpaca, if you cannot do this then the alpaca walk is not suitable for you. Alpacas can be scared or surprised by sudden sounds/movement this means that it is possible your alpaca may suddenly pull or shy during the walk. This is not common/usual but it is possible. You must be confident that you have the strength to hold the alpaca if he suddenly pulls forward during the walk. If you are not sure then please telephone us and we will advise whether the walk is suitable or rather our alpaca adventure may be more suitable.

We have now completed our short Summer season (July 4th - September 12th) and over late September and October will be preparing for the Christmas Fair season (COVID allowing) in November.

Our next alpaca walks will be in December - the Frosty Christmas walks (16th-19th December) and then six Jolly January walks in January 2021.  SORRY FROSTY WALKS ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED BUT WE ARE OPERATING A WAITING LIST. (It is worth going on this - e.g. we have just had a cancellation for the 19th and are contacting those on the list for the 19th).

The prices of our walks depends on what drink/food option you have after your walk, the walk part is the same for all options.
 
For our main Summer season up to September 18th ’21 we have refreshment only and home made cream tea options. These are currently fully booked but you can now book for our five Frosty Christmas Walks in December which include a range of Frosty Christmas treats to fill you up after your bracing alpaca walk.

Our Christmas season starts with our early bird Christmas shop on Saturday 30th October. Throughout November we at at fairs and then we have a Christmas Shop open Mon 6th - Sat 11th Dec '21 10.30-4.30pm. Details will be on our website from Early October.

Animal Activities Licence

Yew Tree Alpacas have been licenced by the East Hertfordshire District Council to operate an alpaca walking business based at Anstey in East Hertfordshire. We hold animal activities licence 19/0915/AA which is valid for 3 years.

Our first licence was issued from March 2019 – March 2022. We were reassessed in June 2022 and the renewed licence is valid until March 2025.

Thank you to all who came along - our 2024 Season has now finished.  The 2025 season will start in March '25 and complete September '25. Prices and dates will be going live in the evening of Wednesday December 11th.

Please note we are not an open farm and alpaca walks will be only available on set dates.

 

Yew Tree Alpacas offer a fabulous Alpaca walking experience in the East Hertfordshire countryside, a fantastic present or a treat for yourself. An unforgettable experience for that animal/alpaca mad friend or relative. 

 

In 2024 you have a choice of three types of walking experience

 

1 - The Alpaca Mini Walk  20 mins. Event duration 2 hrs

2 - The Alpaca Walk Experience Walk  30 mins. Event duration approx. 2.5 hrs

3 - The Extended Countryside Walk Walk  1 hour.    Event duration approx 3.5 hrs

 

 

Please note: if you need assistance to walk at all you should book our Alpaca Adventure or Cria Capers- none of the walks are suitable if you cannot walk unaided with both hands on a lead rope. Please go to our alpaca adventure which is likely to suit you better.

 

 

Our walks offer so much more than just an alpaca walk.....

 

• Initial short talk on alpacas and back ground to our herd
• Short trip on luxury mini bus to walk location (excl alpaca mini)
• Guidance and training on walking with an alpaca
• An alpaca walk with one of our boys 
• Feeding carrots and photo opportunities at the end of the walk
• Mingling with the rest of the boys herd
• Back to Yew Tree base to enjoy either lunch or Cream Tea & home made cakes (depending on the date you choose)
• Alpacas grazing nearby (depends on month)
• Opportunity to browse & buy at our Yew Tree alpaca shop 

 

A summary of the each walk is given below with a more detailed programme for each on the pdf further down the page.

 

The Alpaca Mini includes a 15 minute walk around our fields at Yew Tree, this is for the slower walker and is more an amble than a conventional alpaca walk. If the group needs to stop this will be possible. If you are little nervous, have no experience with animals or worried about the speed you walk you should book this option. Children 10-15 years can book 1-1 alpaca on this option only.

 

The Alpaca Walk Experience includes a 30 minute walk around picturesque fields and parkland at the alpacas home location. This is the easier of the two main walks but does require you to be able to walk confidently without assistance.

 

The Extended Countryside Walk includes a one hour walk with your alpaca in the open countryside with wonderful views across open countryside. This is more demanding than the walk experience and includes an uphill walk. You need to be confident you can walk at a regular walking pace and hold the lead rope if your alpaca pulls suddenly.

Food and Refreshment

An important part of Yew Tree's walks are the home made lunch and teas afterwards. All the sandwiches are made at Yew Tree on the day and the cakes and scones for the cream tea are home made at Yew Tree. You can check out the details of each below. Each walk date will have either a lunch or cream tea and cakes afterwards. This is included in the dates diary below.

 

The cream tea walks do not include sandwiches but there is an option to book sandwiches as an addition to the cream tea and cakes. Note, this additional pre booked option and cannot be booked on the day of the walk. See below.

 

Our programme has 10 walk events per month, April – September - There is just one Alpaca Mini per month and the other 9 dates are a mix of the Walk Experience and Countryside walks. For each event date we give the type of walk and whether it has lunch or cream tea 

 

  

The Walk Experience and Countryside walks include a short 8-10 mins ride on a luxury mini coach to and from the walk location. It will not be possible to travel to the location separately.

Upgrade to Afternoon Tea on the cream tea & cake walks

 

You have the chance to upgrade the Countryside or Walk Experience walks which have Cream Tea and Homemade cakes with them.  You can add freshly made sandwiches to these walks. Each serving includes one round of sandwiches (4 sandwiches) with salad garnish and a bag of crisps. Crisps can be any brand.

 

The sandwiches will be on brown/granary bread and will be one of the following four fillings (you can request which filling of those below via email beforehand)
 

• Cheddar Cheese & Chutney
• Brie, redcurrant & rocket
• Tuna mayo & spring onion
• Ham salad

 

The cost is £4.50 per person

Orders for two or more people within one booking will have different fillings for each round of sandwiches.

Please note it is not possible to have sandwiches instead of the cream tea/cakes included in the cost of the walk. The above offer is in addition.

Gift Vouchers for Alpaca Walking

 

We no longer do gift vouchers specifically for Alpaca Walks. Instead we have a range of general gift vouchers which can be bought in values of  £5, £10, £15, £25, £50, £75 & £100, which can be used against our activities, including walks, or in our online shop. 

 

Simply work out the value of walk you wish to buy for and order the appropriate value in our gift vouchers. You can either receive your voucher online or opt for a gift box which includes a hard copy voucher. In the gift box you will receive the A6 card voucher in an envelope (similar to that pictured below), an alpaca walking greeting card in cello for you to complete, plus a colour A5 leaflet on Alpaca walking and colour A5 leaflet on Yew Tree Alpacas.

Animal Activities Licence

 

Yew Tree Alpacas have been licenced by the East Hertfordshire District Council to operate an alpaca walking business based at Anstey in East Hertfordshire. We hold animal activities licence 19/0915/AA which is valid for 3 years.

Our first licence was issued from March 2019 – March 2022. We were reassessed in June 2022 and the renewed licence is valid until March 2025.

Terms & Conditions

 

Please note the following terms & conditions regarding Yew Tree Alpacas, Alpaca Walking

 

We can take a maximum of 10 alpacas on the walk experience, 9 alpacas on the extended walk, 8 alpacas on the Alpaca mini.  If the bookings are 4 or fewer, 2 weeks before the date, then we reserve the right to offer an alternative date or your money back. During all walks we have two Yew Tree personnel on foot. One at the front and and one at the back of the alpacas for extra safety and security. Children are welcome 10 -15 years. On the Walk Experience and Countryside walks they must share an alpaca with an adult, the accompanying adult must be 18 years or above. Note on the Alpaca Mini it is possible to book one alpaca for one child 10-15yrs Note if your booking is just 1 adult, 1 alpaca we assume you will be attending alone. If it is only you who wants to do the walk and your partner is just coming to accompany then you book the shared option and you do all the walking with our alpaca. If you come with someone who has not booked, they should either drop you off and return later or wait in the car. There is no waiting area on site for those who have not booked. The walk experience and Countryside walks involve a short trip mini bus trip to and from the walk location.  The arrival and latter part of the event are at Yew Tree Alpacas base in Anstey. It is not possible to travel direct to the walk location or go in your car behind the minibus. There is no discount on the two person price if a 10-15yr old child is one of the pair All stated prices include both the alpaca part of the event and either lunch or cream tea. There is no extra to pay for the food and refreshment part. Conversely you don't receive a discount if you do not want the food and refreshment section.

You will receive automatic confirmation by email at the time of booking. Approx 5 days before the event you will receive the detailed programme and pre walk information.   Date changes cost £10 per booking up to 14 days before the date of your walk. If you wish to change the date then please contact us and we will provide you with a code so you can rebook online. This code will be for your original purchase price minus our £10 admin fee. It is not feasible to change to another date within 14 days of your walk. Cancellation 14 or more days prior to the event 50% refund. Within 14 days no refund. If some or all of your group do not attend on the day there are no refunds. If showery/light rain on the day of the visit it is likely to be going ahead. However if there are high winds/heavy rain (or other unforeseen circumstances) then we may have to cancel the visit. We will telephone/email you by 7.30am if the walk is to be cancelled. We will offer you a voucher code for the full value of your booking so you can book one of our walks in 2024 (or if you prefer a refund this will also be feasible minus an admin charge of £5.00). Please note this is only if we (Yew Tree Alpacas) have to cancel the walk. If you decide not to come due to weather conditions and the walk goes ahead, the above does not apply, there is no refund. Please note the duration of the two alpaca walks published. If you are a slow walker, unsteady on your feet or have an injury which impacts on your walking ability, then the walk experience and Countryside walks are NOT suitable. The alpaca mini may be possible but you should email us to check otherwise book the alpaca adventure. You must be able to use both hands to hold the lead rope when walking your alpaca, if you cannot do this then the alpaca walks are not suitable for you.  Alpacas can be scared or surprised by sudden sounds/movement this means that it is possible your alpaca may suddenly pull or shy during the walk. This is not common/usual but it is possible. You must be confident that you have the strength to hold the alpaca if he suddenly pulls forward during the walk. It is very important you consider carefully which walk is most appropriate for you/your group. If you are not sure and you have not walked with Yew Tree alpacas before then book either the mini or the Walk experience, you can always book the Countryside walk at another time if you enjoy your visit.
